Start-up businesses putting Bromsgrove on the map

Despite recent tough times in business, there were 681,704 new companies formed in 2019 – a 2.8% increase on figures from 2018.

Unsurprisingly, London flew the flag for new formations with Leicester, Glasgow, and Bristol not far behind. Whilst tech startups lead the way, there were some surprising statistics – for the first time, mobile food vendors (takeaways or street vendors) surpassed the opening of traditional restaurant businesses. Surely a sign of the times.

Other surprises included Controlaccount’s very hometown, Bromsgrove, which had the 9th highest rate for start-up enterprises – a 52% rise from 2018 and beating big city players such as Edinburgh.

Matt Smith of the Centre for Entrepreneurs said, “It is pleasing to see that entrepreneurs were not perturbed by the turbulence of 2019, however, we feel there should be some tightening of rules around identification of directors at Companies House.”
